9. Tighten the thread. Clip the surplus piece of cul de canard. Lock the feather in place with three or four more tight thread wraps.

10. Stack a small bunch of elk hair in a hair stacker to even the tips. Remove the hair from the stacker. Pinch the bunch to the top of the fly. Continue pinching the hair to the fly and make three firm wraps of thread. Help hint: Pinching the hair to the hook while simultaneously wrapping the thread prevents the wing from spinning around the hook under the pressure of the thread.
